I have digressed from my usual post format to hear your thoughts and opinions on the new bill that the US House of Representatives has approved.

The “Securing Adolescents From Online-Exploitation Act (SAFE Act of 2007)” requires more stringent penalties (up to $300,000 in fines) for failure to report suspected violations involving child pornography. I will not form a solid opinion on this bill until I gather more information.

That is why I want your thoughts and opinions on this bill. I will not sway your opinion with too much commentary on my part. However, I will encourage you to take a close look at the bill. Contrary to the Internet buzz, there is nothing in the bill that specifically targets public Wi-fi Internet access providers. Also there is nothing mentioned in the bill that requires Internet providers to “snoop” on their customers. In fact, the bill has a section that addresses this question.

From the bill:

“Nothing in this section shall be construed to require an electronic communication service provider or a remote computing service provider to—

“(1)

“monitor any user, subscriber, or customer of that provider;

“(2)

“monitor the content of any communication of any person described in paragraph (1); or

“(3)

“affirmatively seek facts or circumstances described in subsection (a)(2).
