I wasn’t able to figure out THIS solution but merely by changing the ribbon cable connector to my DVD drive to one that was closer to the motherboard, the problem went away. It was a total shot in the dark that worked. I DO have an NEC DVD drive, and based on posts I’ve read on Ubuntu, that seems to be a common denominator.
